FUN88 is a leading online gaming operator that not only offers a wide variety of interactive gaming and gambling products, but also has a steady stream of sponsorships and brand ambassadors in place.
Newcastle United Football Club, FUN88’s Official Asian Betting Partner, are an English Premier League club who were founded way back in 1892, following the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The ground that they played at from their inception, St. James’ Park, is still their home to this day and is now a magnificent all-seater stadium with a capacity of just over 52,000.
It is the oldest, and largest stadium in the North East of England and, unlike many modern stadia, St. James’ Park sits, proudly, in the centre of the city.
The bond which the club has with its supporters is legendary. Home matches are nearly always sold out and a loyal following of thousands, known as the ‘Toon Army,’ travel to each away game. ‘Toon’ refers to the pronunciation of ‘town’ by the locals who are known as Geordies.
The club is nicknamed the ‘Magpies,’ because of the black and white striped shirts that the players wear, and they’ve won four league championships, six FA Cups, a Charity Shield, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the UEFA Intertoto Cup during their history. Their fiercest rivals are neighbours Sunderland, and the ‘Tyne and Wear derby’ is one of the most keenly contested rivalries in the country.
Some of the best English players to have ever played the game professionally have done so for Newcastle, who, throughout their entire history, have never played in a league below the second tier of English professional football. Local hero, John Edward Thompson ‘Jackie’ Milburn, christened Wor Jackie (Our Jackie) by the supporters, was the first real superstar at the club.
Between 1943 and 1957, the centre-forward amassed 200 goals in 397 appearances, a club record until it was surpassed by another legendary player, Alan Shearer, against Portsmouth on 4th February 2006. Shearer, captain of club and country, had signed for the club in 1996 for a then world record fee of £15 million and would go on to score 206 goals in all competitions from his 404 appearances, a record that still stands today. His manager at the time of signing was Kevin Keegan, another star for both the Magpies and the England national side. Under Keegan, Newcastle came the closest they ever have to winning the Premier League, finishing second in both the 1995/96 and 1996/97 campaigns.
Two of their best results – a 5-0 win over Manchester United, and a 3-2 Champions League victory over Spanish giants FC Barcelona, the latter thanks to a Faustino Asprilla hat-trick, came during this era.
